Curriculum intent
Music at Retford Oaks Academy is a creative and expressive subject that enables students to develop confidence, imagination and technical skill through performance, composition and listening. We aim to inspire a lifelong appreciation of music while supporting students to develop as performers, creators and critical listeners.
Through a broad and engaging curriculum, students explore a wide range of musical styles, cultures and traditions. Alongside practical music-making, students develop teamwork, discipline and creativity, building confidence both individually and as part of an ensemble.
Key stage 3: years 7–9
At key stage 3, students develop their understanding of music through performance, composition and listening activities. The curriculum is designed to build confidence and musicality, while introducing a wide range of styles and genres.
In year 7, students begin by developing their vocal skills through Find Your Voice Level 1, alongside exploring rhythm and ensemble work through African drumming. They also begin to develop composition and performance skills through Message in a Bottle, based on the theme of theme parks, before ending the year with variety band skills, encouraging collaboration and performance confidence.
In year 8, students explore the history and development of music through a range of styles and eras. They study blues, rock ‘n’ roll, Elvis Presley and Glenn Miller, alongside festive repertoire such as Jingle Bells. Students also explore baroque music, including Johann Pachelbel, while developing their vocal confidence through Find Your Voice Level 2. In the summer term, students explore media and film music, developing their understanding of how music is used to create mood and atmosphere.
In year 9, students build on their skills through more independent and creative work. They explore music for stage and screen, including pieces such as Somewhere Over the Rainbow and seasonal repertoire. Students also develop instrumental skills through ukulele, study great composers, and explore musical variation and composition. The year also includes work on Britpop, allowing students to engage with modern popular music and develop their own creative ideas.
Key stage 4: GCSE (BTEC music)
At key stage 4, students can study BTEC music, which provides a practical and engaging approach to developing musical skills.
The course covers four key areas: performing, composing, listening and musical technology. Students develop their ability to perform confidently, create original music and understand a wide range of musical styles.
Music supports the development of a wide range of transferable skills valued by both employers and universities, including teamwork, creativity, discipline and communication. It also helps improve listening skills, concentration, coordination and memory, while providing a positive outlet for self-expression.
The course is suitable for students who already play an instrument or sing and enjoy exploring different musical styles and ideas.
