Our  curriculum

Students have access to a broad curriculum at Retford Oaks and are supported to make appropriate choices for the future based upon their educational and career aspirations. The diverse range of subjects enables students to nurture existing talents and develop new skills, all underpinned by a solid understanding of the core skills in maths, English and science.

A broad and balanced curriculum

At Retford Oaks Academy, our curriculum is designed to be broad, balanced and relevant, supporting every student from the age of 11 through to 18. We are committed to ensuring that all learners make strong progress at an appropriate pace, with a curriculum that is carefully differentiated to meet individual needs. Alongside academic achievement, we place equal importance on students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, fostering enjoyment, curiosity and a positive attitude towards learning. Through strong partnerships between students, families, staff and the wider community, we create a supportive environment where high expectations and equal access underpin every learning experience.

Our approach promotes continuity and progression across all key stages, ensuring students are well-prepared for each phase of their education and beyond. Teaching at Retford Oaks Academy encourages a variety of engaging and relevant learning opportunities, helping students to develop respect for their environment and take pride in their school. We strive to make learning both purposeful and enjoyable, supporting students to feel confident, challenged and motivated in every subject area.

The curriculum is designed to develop inquisitive, independent and resilient learners who can think critically, question ideas and apply their knowledge in meaningful ways. Students build strong foundations in literacy and numeracy, while also gaining the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to thrive in further education, employment and an ever-changing world. Through carefully considered subject choices, students are supported to follow pathways that align with their aspirations and future goals.

Personal development

We also place a strong emphasis on personal development. Through subjects such as Religious Education, students explore moral values, develop respect for different beliefs and cultures, and gain a deeper understanding of the diverse world around them. Our curriculum encourages students to appreciate human achievement, understand global interdependence, and become responsible, active citizens.

Beyond the classroom

Learning at Retford Oaks Academy extends far beyond the classroom. A wide range of enrichment opportunities enhances the curriculum, allowing students to explore new interests, develop talents and experience learning in its broadest sense. Physical development and wellbeing are also prioritised, empowering students to take responsibility for their health and lead active, balanced lifestyles.
