Curriculum intent
Photography at Retford Oaks Academy enables students to explore creativity through the lens, developing technical skills alongside artistic expression. We aim to nurture independent and imaginative photographers who can communicate ideas, emotions and narratives through visual imagery.
Through a practical and exploratory curriculum, students engage with both traditional and digital photography. They analyse the work of photographers and artists, using this to inform and inspire their own creative outcomes, while developing confidence in using industry-standard tools and techniques.
Key stage 4: GCSE
At key stage 4, students study photography as a creative art form, developing both technical and artistic skills.
The course encourages students to experiment with a range of photographic techniques and processes, using both camera work and digital editing tools such as Adobe Photoshop. Students explore how images can be manipulated and enhanced to create meaning and impact.
Students also analyse the work of photographers and designers, using this research to inspire their own work. They develop their ability to plan, create and refine a portfolio of images, expressing their ideas through photography with increasing independence and confidence.
This course provides an excellent foundation for progression to a level art and design or photography courses.
Key stage 5: A level
At key stage 5, students develop a more specialised and independent approach to photography, exploring a wide range of media, techniques and ideas.
Students research and investigate relevant images, artefacts and sources, working with both traditional photographic methods and digital processes. They are encouraged to develop a personal style, exploring themes, ideas and concepts in depth.
The course supports students in refining their technical skills while also developing their ability to communicate ideas visually. Drawing skills are developed where appropriate, supporting the recording and development of ideas.
Students produce a portfolio of work that demonstrates a personal and meaningful response to a given starting point, brief or stimulus. This body of work reflects their creativity, technical ability and conceptual understanding.
Skills and personal development
Through photography, students develop a wide range of transferable skills that support both academic success and creative pathways. These include:
- creativity and visual communication
- technical skills in photography and editing
- independent thinking and idea development
- analysis and evaluation of visual work
- attention to detail and refinement
Students learn to express themselves visually while developing confidence in both their creative and technical abilities.
Enrichment opportunities
Students are given opportunities to extend their learning through creative projects, independent exploration and exposure to different styles of photography. These experiences help to develop their artistic voice and deepen their understanding of photography as a visual art form.
