Curriculum intent

Construction provides students with a practical understanding of the construction industry and the wide range of careers it offers. We aim to develop responsible, skilled and safety-conscious learners who understand how construction projects are planned, managed and completed.

Through a vocational and hands-on approach, students explore both practical and professional roles within the industry. Alongside technical knowledge, students develop teamwork, communication and an awareness of workplace expectations, preparing them for further study or employment.

Key stage 4: GCSE (level 1/2 award in construction)

At key stage 4, students can study construction through the WJEC level 1/2 award, which provides an introduction to the construction industry and its many career pathways.

The course is designed to help students develop an understanding of how construction projects operate, from planning through to completion. Students explore a range of technical roles such as bricklaying, carpentry and electrical work, alongside professional roles including site inspection, project management and architecture. They also learn how these roles work together within the construction process.

The course provides a broad overview of the industry, focusing on the skills, knowledge and behaviours required in real working environments. It is particularly suited to students who are interested in practical learning and want to explore construction from a hands-on perspective.

Students are expected to demonstrate high standards of behaviour and responsibility, with a strong emphasis on health and safety. They are encouraged to develop maturity, self-discipline and an understanding of workplace expectations, helping to prepare them for future pathways.

This qualification provides a strong foundation for further study, apprenticeships or entry into the construction industry, supporting progression into a wide range of roles.

Through construction, students develop a wide range of transferable skills that support both academic success and future employment. These include:

  • practical and technical understanding
  • teamwork and communication
  • awareness of health and safety
  • responsibility and self-discipline
  • problem-solving and organisation

Students learn to work safely, collaboratively and effectively, developing skills that are essential within the construction industry.

Enrichment opportunities

Students are given opportunities to extend their learning through practical experiences and exposure to real-world construction contexts. These experiences help to develop understanding of the industry and provide insight into future career pathways.
