Curriculum intent
Business studies at Retford Oaks Academy encourages students to develop an understanding of how businesses operate in a dynamic and competitive world. We aim to develop informed, analytical and enterprising individuals who can think critically about real-world business issues and make confident, reasoned decisions.
Through a contemporary and engaging curriculum, students explore how businesses are started, run and developed in local, national and international contexts. Alongside subject knowledge, students develop skills in analysis, evaluation and decision-making, preparing them for further study and future employment.
Key stage 4: GCSE business and enterprise
At key stage 4, students study GCSE business and enterprise, developing an understanding of how businesses respond to challenges and opportunities in a competitive marketplace.
In today’s world, it is important to be one step ahead of the competition, whether that is in business, employment or future careers. This course helps students to develop an analytical understanding of the world around them, learning from real business examples and the decisions made by successful entrepreneurs and organisations.
Students who choose this course are encouraged to actively engage with business and enterprise, developing as independent learners with an enquiring and critical approach. They learn to distinguish between fact and opinion, build logical arguments and make informed judgements about business situations.
The course also develops students’ ability to apply knowledge and understanding to a range of contemporary issues in local, national and international contexts.
Assessment structure:
- 40% externally assessed exam
- 60% internally assessed coursework
Key stage 5: A level business
At A level, business studies provides students with a deeper understanding of how organisations operate and succeed in a changing economic environment.
The course is designed to develop knowledge, understanding and skills related to a wide range of business activities. Students explore areas such as marketing, finance, operations and human resources, while also investigating real businesses and current market trends.
The course encourages research, investigation and evaluation, helping students to understand the complexity of decision-making in business. It is ideal for students who wish to develop their understanding of business in preparation for employment, apprenticeships or further study.
A level business supports progression into a wide range of careers, including marketing, finance, retail management and general business roles.
