Science

Our aim in science is to enhance students curiosity, wonder and questioning, building on their natural inclination to seek meaning and understanding of the world around them. We encourage them to problem solve, think logically, work collaboratively and communicate ideas. We want them to be able to vocalise their opinions addressing ethical, social and economic issues – all essential life skills. 

In years 7 and 8, students follow the AQA key stage 3 science syllabus which we have based around the Activate key stage 3 schemes of work. This programme of study builds on the observations that students have made in key stage 2 so that they can work progressively towards explaining them. 

There are ten ‘Big Ideas’ across the subject disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics which underpin our schemes of work: 

Organisms, ecosystems, genes, reactions, Earth, forces, electromagnetism, energy, waves and matter. 

Students will develop a deeper understanding of these ideas and concepts as they progress through school. It is important that they forge connections between these subject areas and also develop their scientific enquiry skills, through practical work.  

The science department offers a range of extra curricular activities. We run an exciting programme of events during British Science Week and a number of educational visits and competitions take place throughout the year to inspire our students and enrich our science curriculum. 

Career opportunities, diversity, cross curricular and cultural links are signposted throughout. This prepares students for following the AQA GCSE specification which they start in year 9.
