On 5 December 2018, 11 year 9 students from Retford Oaks attended the regional heats of the Subsea STEM Challenge. Students were given a brief to design, code, build and present a bot which could be used underwater to check the condition of electricity pipes from wind turbines. All our students worked incredibly hard all day completing very difficult challenges and showed true innovation and perseverance.
Students and staff also got the chance to tour around a Boeing Engineering of the Future Factory which showed how carbon fibre is made and used, as well as the impact it has had on the aviation industry.
In addition, they were given the opportunity to see how engineering has progressed over recent years, some of the cutting edge technology being introduced, and parts of Rolls Royce engines that are being constructed for the 787 Dreamliner jets!
