Eight of our students have just returned from an unforgettable week as part of the Jo White Summer School 2025 – and what a week it’s been!
Year 11 students Logan, Jacob, Katie, Olivia, Myla, Holly, Lana and George have all enjoyed thought-provoking discussions on green energy to behind-the-scenes access at some of the UK’s most influential organisations. Our students have risen to every challenge, asked intelligent, considered questions, and represented Retford Oaks Academy with confidence and pride.
The week began close to home with visits to DHL and the Fusion Energy Café in Worksop. Here, students explored the future of green fusion energy and careers in science and technology. They brought this knowledge to life during a mock Select Committee hearing, questioning a panel that included Ben Bradley (former MP for Mansfield), Michael Shanks MP, and key figures from the UK energy sector.
In London, students enjoyed a Q&A with Deputy Political Editor Vicki Young at the BBC and heard from media professionals about the wide range of roles within the organisation. They also took part in a parliamentary-style Select Committee session of their own.
Other highlights included a tour of Westminster and a visit to the Speaker’s Chamber, where they were welcomed by Sir Lindsay Hoyle. The group was also lucky enough to visit 10 Downing Street not once, but twice – and even met (and pet!) its most famous resident, Larry the cat!
At Clifford Chance, one of the world’s top international law firms, students learned about legal careers and working at a global level. At Pentland Brands (owners of Speedo, Ellesse and Berghaus), they explored how marketing, design and branding teams develop ideas and campaigns.
On the final day, the students visited TikTok HQ, where they learned about careers in social media, technology, and content. A London-based treasure hunt followed, challenging them to navigate the Tube and work together as a team. They then had the amazing opportunity to visit the U.S. Embassy, where they met Deputy Ambassador Matthew Palmer and gained insight into international diplomacy.
To wrap up, they returned to Downing Street for a second visit – this time to present their final reflections. The week concluded with a Gala Dinner, featuring Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Wes Streeting MP as guest speaker. He shared his personal story and answered students’ questions with honesty and encouragement.
This week has been life-changing. It’s opened doors, raised aspirations, and shown our students what’s possible when they step outside their comfort zone and embrace every opportunity.
Huge thanks to Jo White, MP, for her commitment to giving young people access to experiences and environments they may not ordinarily see, and to our students, who did us proud every step of the way.
