Choosing the right school for your child is an important decision, and attending an open event is one of the best ways to get a genuine feel for what a school offers.

With our different types of events available, it can sometimes be difficult to know which one will be most helpful. This guide will help you understand the options and decide which open event will give you the insight you need to make a confident and informed choice.

1. Why should we attend an open event?

Open events are a great opportunity to experience the school environment first-hand. You’ll meet staff, explore facilities, and get a feel for our school’s values and culture, helping you decide if it’s the right fit for your child.

2. What types of open events are available?

We typically offer:

  • Open evening – Our largest event held in summer, with full access to classrooms, staff, and activities.
  • Open mornings – Smaller, quieter visits during a normal school day.
  • Get to Know Retford Oaks – Held in autumn, an opportunity to talk to our our key members of staff, including our principal, safeguarding team, and the head of year 7.
  • Personal tours – One-to-one visits tailored to your interests and questions, these are booked by request only.

3. Which event is best for us?

It depends on what you’re looking for:

“We want to explore the classrooms and all the activities on offer, and chat to current students about their experiences.”

Our summer open evening is the perfect opportunity to explore the school and take part in activites and demonstrations.

“We’d like to really get to know your key members of staff, and be able to talk directly with them to learn more about practices such as safeguarding and curriculum.”

We hold our Get to Know Retford Oaks event in autumn as a way for prospective parents and students to meet with the key people who will shape their secondary school journey. Speak directly with our principal, SENCO, head of year 7 and other key staff who will answer your questions.

“We’d prefer to visit during the day, in a quieter environment than open evening, and have the opportunity to talk to the principal in a small group”

Our open mornings are ideal for families who would like more of a personalised environment to learn more about our academy. Held over two mornings in summer, they offer an opportunity to meet with the principal and experience a tour in groups no larger than twenty.

“We want to see how the school operates during a normal working day at a time that suits us.”

We are more than happy to arrange personal tours by request on a day that suits you! Please give our academy office a call on 01777 861618 to arrange.

4. Can we attend more than one event?

Absolutely! Many families attend an open evening first to enjoy the activites on hand and to explore the layout of the school, then return for the Get to Know Retford Oaks event to gain a deeper understanding, ask questions and meet key staff.

5. Should my child attend with me?

Yes, we strongly encourage it. Your child’s comfort and enthusiasm are key, and attending together helps them feel involved in the decision.

6. What if we can’t attend any scheduled events?

Please contact us directly – we’re happy to arrange an alternative visit or provide additional information to support your decision.

7. How do we book?

All our events can be booked online.

Booking details are also available on our admissions pages or via the school office. We recommend booking early, as spaces can fill quickly.

8. What happens after the event?

We always recommend that you take time to reflect as a family. Compare your experience with other schools and consider what felt right for your child, not just academically, but socially and emotionally too.
