Two weeks ago, I had the opportunity to visit the university of Nottingham and participate in some philosophy lectures. This was an amazing experience, as I got to see first-hand what university life has to offer.
We participated in several lectures including some based upon utilitarianism, euthanasia, and animal ethics. These lectures were taught by professors who specialised in these fields, which was beneficial because it allowed students to ask questions which gave a special insight into each topic that was discussed.
We also had a tour of the university campus led by someone who was doing a PhD in the philosophy of religion. He gave us examples of what the university is like, what the nightlife is like and what’s it’s like being on campus. He described all the different buildings, who they were named after and what subjects were taught there. This was fun because it showed us what it would be like to experience university life is like outside of lecture halls.
Personally, my favourite part of the day was the animal ethics lecture. As people had very different perspectives on the topic and what is truly ethical. Out of all the lectures this was by far the most controversial, which meant it was the most interesting to see people’s point of views. The topics sparked debates on raising farm animals, and is keeping a pet truly ethical?
This was an amazing experience that really opened my eyes to the possibilities available to me in the future.
