Course specification

The BTEC in Applied Science builds upon knowledge and understanding gained at GCSE in all three science subjects. It is designed to meet the needs of employers and higher education, so learners have the option of progressing straight into the work environment or choosing to continue their studies in higher education.

Students will use investigative skills and procedures across biology, chemistry and physics. They will also study science in a real world context which is excellent preparation for the following careers.

  • Lab technician
  • Forensics
  • Nursing
  • Sports science

Course Structure

For the extended certificate there are four units that need to be completed.

Mandatory units:

  • principles and applications of science
  • practical scientific procedures and techniques
  • science investigation skills

One further optional unit will complete the certificate. Assessment will be through examinations and coursework. The principles and applications of science examinations in biology, chemistry and physics will be externally assessed.
